What is an AI agent and how can a business use one?

Short answer

An AI agent is software built on a language model that can plan steps, use tools such as your CRM, calendar or database, and take actions toward a goal instead of only answering questions. Businesses use them for lead qualification, booking, support triage, research and internal reporting — always with clear limits and human review.

Chatbot vs agent

A chatbot replies. An agent replies and acts — it can look up a record, create a lead, check a calendar or send a follow-up.

Good first use cases

Pick a narrow, repetitive job with clear rules.

  • Qualify inbound leads and book calls
  • Triage support messages
  • Summarise sales calls into the CRM
  • Prepare weekly performance summaries

Keep it safe

Give the agent only the permissions it needs, ground it in approved facts, log every action and route anything uncertain to a person.

Frequently asked questions

Will an AI agent make up answers?

It can if left ungrounded. Restricting it to approved knowledge and adding a handover path reduces that risk.

How long does it take to build?

A focused single-task agent can often be live in a few weeks.
